Ensure Religious Tolerance

Agona {Central Region} 05 April 2000.

The Agona District Ahmadiyya Youth Organisation has held a two-day rally with a call on youth to ensure religious tolerance.

The Ahmadiyya Youth rally, the first of its kind to be held at Agona Swedru, was on the theme, "Love for ones country is part of faith". Mr. Mohammed Paintsil, Mfantsiman district high court registrar, called on Muslim youths to refrain from fanning religious conflicts and instead tolerate the views of others and show forgiveness where necessary.

The registrar urged them not to put up boisterous behaviours, saying that they should show respect and not to rebel against their parents and authority. Mr. Paintsil said God enjoins everybody to love his country by discharging his obligations with honesty and integrity in order to enhance socio-economic advancement.

Journalists asked to ensure balanced reporting on election

Obuasi {Ashanti Region} 05 April 2000.

The Catholic Bishop of Obuasi, the Right Reverend Thomas Mensah, on Monday called for balanced media reporting during this year's political campaigns to ensure a peaceful election.

"The media have a key role to play in the impending elections. Reporting the truth sometimes hurts but it will do well to the wider society”, Bishop Mensah, said when he interacted with journalists at his residence in Obuasi.

"We have come of age as a nation and we have to bring out the truth about the nation and about ourselves," he said and urged journalists not to influence the electorate with their writings but present the true state of affairs in the country and allow the electorate to make informed decisions.

He advised the media to contribute towards a peaceful election by avoiding reports that could re-open old wounds, noting that wrong and biased political reporting could lead to violence.

On the Population and Housing Census, Bishop Mensah stressed the need for all Catholics to take part in the exercise.

"As a good Catholic, you must be counted in the on-going census since a good Catholic is necessarily a good citizen."
