Ghana Football Association invites 75 to Under-20 camp

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 16 April 2002 - The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has invited 75 players to camp at the National Sports College, Winneba, for a justify-your-inclusion exercise for the National Under-20 team. The players were invited after an intensive selection exercise organised by GFA across the country and conducted by Isaac Paha, coach of the under-20 team.

 

A release signed by Mr. Kofi Nsiah, General Secretary of the GFA, said camping would start from Sunday, April 14 and ends on April 27th. The players invited are Micheal Akowuah, David Kwao, Faisal Seidu, Samudini Ayara,Gaishon Kofi,Seidu Avivor,Osei Kofi, Abdulai Issaka, Mallam Idayah, Lawrence Quashie, Samuel Saka, Ibrahim Sadiq, Daniel Okunka Lamptey, Osumanu Mumuni and Issifu Amadu all from the Greater Accra Region.

 

Others are Habib Mohamed, Rahaman Baba, Ricky Essuman, Theophilus Armah, Emmanuel Ofori, Jacob Coffie, Tony Davis, Ekow Benson,Charles Crentsil and Richard Mensah (Central region) while Bright Kukubor, Isaac Amoako, Adjei

Collins, Kwesi Boateng, Sumaila Iddrisu, Nana Kofi Egyri, and Randy Tetteh makes up the squad from Brong Ahafo region.

John Aggrey Smith, Dan Ocran, Inusah Mohammed, Salifu Muntari, Osei Kofi, John Johny Jackson and Micheal Mensah are all from the Western Region.

 

Those invited from Ashanti Region are Yaw Kodua, Osei Bonsu, Reginald Gormann, Bright Amoah, Thomas Athur, Francis Quinoo, Issah Abdullai and Agyeman Prempeh with Justice Opoku, Opoku Fofie, Eric Boateng, Kofi Bediako, Samudini

Yahaya and Eric Boakye are from the Eastern Region.

 

Moses Gbadegbe, Sulemana Ibrahim, Falilu Mohamed, Fred Okoh, Christian Dekua, Wahab Sanuku, Abu Sadiq and Iddrisu Issah are from the Volta region. Players selected from the Upper East, Upper West and Northern Region are Issifu Seidu, Bawa Yusif, Ahmed Jafaru, Mohammed Fatawu, Salifu Rahaman, Tamiru Usman, Sumaila Yakubu, Hannan Habib Hannan Abu and Yahuzi Adam.

 

Four other players have also been invited based on their performances at the just ended Guinness Gala Competition. They are Ernest Papa Arko who is currently the leading goal scorer in the league, and Jonathan Quartey both of Liberty Professionals; Bawa Mohammed of B.A United and George Biyara of Mine Stars.

Hearts clash with Oly on Sunday

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 16 April 2002 - Defending league champions, Accra Hearts of oak, clash with city rivals Olympics in the top liner of the third week fixtures of the Premier League matches on Sunday. Hearts top the two-week old league on six points followed by Olympics on four points setting a stage for a big showdown between the two traditional rival clubs.

 

According to the fixtures released by the Professional League Board (PLB), Fabulous Kumasi Asante Kotoko who registered a remarkable 3-3 drawn game against Santos of South Africa in the CAF Cup competition have a crunch encounter against Obuasi Goldfields at the Len Clay Sports Stadium.

 

Dansoman-based Liberty Professional lock horns with Power F/C at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, with Mine Stars and Dawu Youngsters locking horns at Prestea. Real Tamale United would welcome Tano Bofoakwa to their new base at Bolgatanga.

 

Other encounters slated for Sunday are; Suhum Maxbees play host to soccer mountaineers Okwawu United at Koforidua, soccer apostles B.A. United meet with Arsenals while Sekondi Hasaacas trek to Kumasi as guest of K. Faisal.

Dwarfs win 2-0 against BRM Stars

 

Cape Coast (Central Region) 16 April 2002 - Cape Coast Mysterious Dwarfs beat newly promoted BRM Stars 2-0 in a friendly football match played at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday. Dwarfs scored a goal in each half of the game.

 

The match which forms part of preparations by the two clubs for the first division league was watched by a capacity crowd. From the blast of the whistle the new entrants matched their opponents boot for boot and twice came close to scoring but their centre forward Baba Musah threw away the chances.

 

From the 30th minute, Dwarfs took command of the game, raided their opponents vital area and snatched the leader in the 35th minute through Maxwell Kyei who was operating on the left flank. Dwarfs continued to dominate and it came as no surprise when Bernard Kumi redirected a cross from the left to raise the tally 2-0 in the 65th minute.

Facelift of Hockey pitch almost ready

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 16 April 2002 - Renovation works currently going on at the Accra Hockey Pitch will be completed on 20 April 2002 on which date the pitch would be handed over to the Ghana Hockey Association to pave way for the 14th edition of the Africa Cup Clubs Championship (ACCC) hockey tournament to be hosted by Ghana.

 

Mr Oko Nikoi Dzani, Chairman of GHA told the Ghana News Agency on Monday that an office has just being completed while construction works on stands were still going to improve upon sitting arrangements for spectators. Mr Nikoi Dzani said more than ¢250 million is being spent on the project. He said countries expected to participate in the tournament are Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt and Kenya, adding that the association is expecting a letter from South Africa confirming their participation.

 

He named the Exchequers of Bank of Ghana, Trustees of SSNIT, Reformers, Ghana Prisons and Ghana National Fire Service as Ghanaian teams, which would vie for honours for the country. Mr Nikoi said the one-week tournament would start on 16 April while participants and officials are expected on 17 and 18 April.

Ghana Boxing Association to hold reception for past boxers

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 16 April 2002 - The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) would on May 10 to organise a reception for all past boxers at the Hospitality centre at the Accra Sports Stadium. The reception forms part of the GBA's short and long term strategic plan aimed at deepening its organisational structures and for the formation of viable association.

 

In release, Mr. Justus Agbeko General Secretary of the GBA said they want to make the programme an annual event on the GBA's calendar adding that the occasion would also be used to bring all past boxers together to contribute their quota to boxing in Ghana.

 

In all more than 30 boxers are expected to attend the reception, which would be honoured by Mr Edward Osei-Kweku Minister of Youth and Sports Mr Joe Aggrey Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports and Dr Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah Chief Executive of the National Sports Council.

Lady golfers prepare for Africa competition

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 16 April 2002 - The Ghana Ladies Golf Union (GLGU) would do everything possible to ensure that Ghana wins the gold medal in this year's All Africa Ladies Golf championship scheduled for Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, from

May 2-4.

 

Mrs Elizabeth Ezan, President of the Union told GNA Sports in Accra at the weekend that the Union has selected quality golf players to represent it at the competition, which was being sponsored by the St. Andrew Golf Club of Scotland, the World's golf governing body.

 

She attributed the dismal performance of the Union in the previous competitions to the its inability to secure sponsorship, adding, "now that the Union is on the process of achieving some of its dreams, nothing could stop us from emerging champions in the competition."

 

Mrs Ezan called on corporate bodies and individuals to support the Union to achieve its aims. Fifteen golfers, representing the Union would leave on 26 April for Abidjan for the competition in which 15 other African countries would be participating.

The next competition would be held in Ghana in the year 2004.
