Quashigah apologises for comment on hip-life

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 December 2001 - Agriculture Minister, Major Courage Quashigah (rtd), on Wednesday said his criticism of hip-life musicians was intended to encourage them to improve on their lyrics but not to demoralise them.

"I must apologise to the hip-life musicians for the generalised criticism on their style of music. It is not to demoralise them but to encourage them to improve on their lyrics."

Major Quashigah said this when 66 award-winning farmers called on him at the Ministry as part of activities to mark the 17th National Farmers' Day celebration, which falls on Friday.

He urged young artistes to tackle social issues like filth, lawlessness and other vices that could help move the nation forward. Major Quashigah also advised them to dress properly and decently and be role models for the up-and-coming ones.

He said though they were doing a good job it would be proper for them to take constructive criticism in good faith because that would make them attain greater heights.

Major Quashigah on Monday expressed his displeasure at the lyrics of hip-life songs on the market. The minister made the comment after a group from Akropong treated those attending the opening of the First Agriculture Fair to traditional music saying the country had been denied such inspiring music.
