Masekela in for musical concert
New entertainment weekly hits newsstands
Accra (Greater Accra) 11 December 2001 - The renowned South African trumpeter, Hugh Masekela arrived in Accra on Monday for a musical concert on December 29.
Masekela, who was accompanied by his Ghanaian wife, Akosua and their two sons, will perform alongside Kweku Sintim Misa in a concert of music and satire dubbed “The best of the west meets the best of the south."
He told newsmen on arrival at the Airport that it was about time African musicians took the centre stage in the music industry by owning the market and controlling their music.
He deplored the way foreign multinational music industries were controlling West African musicians, adding, " The time has come for Africans to manage their music or at least go into joint ventures with the so-called big music industries."
Masekela urged African leaders to help promote their culture and music to project the image of the continent. " We have been hiding our culture and identity for far too long and it is about time we broke out of our shells."
He recalled the last time he performed in Ghana in 1973 with Faizal Helwani's Hadzole Sounds and assured his fans of another good show on December 29.
