Chiefs urged to ensure development
Apam (Central Region)
16 December 2002- Traditional rulers have been urged to protect the chieftaincy
institution, portray the country's rich culture and to help in initiating
development projects in their areas.
They should also use
dialogue to settle all chieftaincy and land disputes to ensure unity, which is
essential for development. Dr. Paa Kwesi Indum, Minister for Economic Planning
gave the advice in a speech read on his behalf at Apam the enstoolment of Nana
Essel Botwe III as queen mother of Apam.
He called on the
people to support efforts to maintain peace, unity and progress. The Minister
reminded the people about the HIV/AIDS pandemic and advised them to desist from
indiscriminate sex.
Nana Edu Effrim X,
Odikro noted that the people of Apam were peace loving people and recalled a
recent media report that, "I, Edu Effrim caused the traditional gong gong
to be beaten in order to mobilize the people of Apam to get ready to fight off
a threat from our neighbours in Mumford.
The reports in the media were totally unfounded, unfortunate and
extremely regrettable. Nothing of that nature ever happened".
Nana Essel Botwe, 39
years old known in private life as Miss Victoria Mensah succeeded her late
great grand mother, Nana Essel Botwe II1, who died about six years ago.
The new Queen Mother
called for unity especially from the two Asafo companies in town and mentioned
education, premarital sex, teenager pregnancy and HIV/AIDS as areas she would
pay attention.
