Assemblies urged to
assist Police
Accra (Greater Accra) 06
February 2003- Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor, Acting Minister
of the Interior on Wednesday appealed to district assemblies to assist the
police in their district with decent accommodation to enable them carry out
their duties efficiently.
He said this was necessary
because of insufficient resources allocated to the police in this year's
budget, which would make it impossible for all police stations in the country
to be provided with accommodation.
The Minister was answering
questions in Parliament from Stephen Amoanor Kwao, NDC-Upper Manya Krobo who wanted to know when the police station at Asesewa would be rehabilitated and what plans were there to
provide permanent accommodation for the police occupying temporary premises at Asesewa and Sekesua.
Dr Addo-Kufuor
said, "It is the policy of the Police Administration to provide permanent
accommodation for all police personnel in the country to reduce the huge sums
of money government spends on rented accommodation for service personnel and
this programme will include the police personnel at Asesewa
and Sekesua".
He said there were 35 police
personnel in rented premises in Asesewa and Sekesua and that the government was taking steps to build
barracks for them and before that time to come they would have to be housed in
hired premises.
The Minister said it should be
possible to extend donor support from development partners to other police
stations as the Chinese government was currently assisting in the provision of
accommodation to the police in
He said until that was done,
"I will like to appeal to district assemblies to assist the police in
their districts with decent accommodation to enable them to carry out their
duties efficiently".
To another question standing in
the name of Mr Kwao as to when a fire service station
would be established at Asesewa, Dr Addo-Kufuor replied that the Ghana National Fire Service
has tasked the District Chief Executive of the area to provide an office and
residential accommodation for a Fire Post.
Dr Addo-Kufuor
said the Kpong Fire Station was covering the Manya Krobo District and that of Akosombo and Krobo Odumase, were all close to Asesewa.
He said all the same, if the
Fire Post were established at Asesewa steps would be
taken to elevate it to a Fire Station when the equipment situation of the Fire
Service improved.
