Hamza quits Kotoko?

Happier Moments, Hamza Mohammed(left) with other Kotoko supporters after an impressive matchKumasi (Ashanti Region) 06 February 2003 - As predicted by keen followers of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, the dissolution of the management team headed by Herbert Mensah has created anxiety and a state of uncertainty among a number of players.

The first to call it quits is Hamza Mohammed who has to return to his ‘mother club’ Real Tamale United (RTU) “because he is unsure about his future in Kotoko” without the Herbert administration. Hamza was contracted from RTU last season on loan with a view of regularising his stay in Kumasi for the 2003 season.

The management of RTU sent a reminder to Kotoko a few weeks ago to respect the terms of the original loan agreement and send Hamza back to Tamale or commence fresh negotiations for his outright sale to Kotoko. The former RTU captain had indicated he was desirous of staying in Kumasi under the Herbert Mensah administration and encouraged the former CEO to intensify efforts to regularise his stay.

However, as soon as Herbert’s administration was kicked out of office, Hamza told the media he did not feel confident enough to continue his association with Kotoko. He told Africa Sports in a telephone chat he was returning to Tamale.

Rumour was rife recently, that Hamza was shifting camp to Kotoko’s arch rivals, Hearts of Oak but Hearts’ management member, Steve Akwetey denied any such move for 2003 season although he admitted that his club pursued RTU’s gem last season.

It is unclear whether Hearts will renew their interest in Hamza now that he has decided to leave the reds. Hamza, himself, would neither confirm nor deny whether he would play for Hearts. All he would says is, “I want to return to my mother club for now.”

A number of players have expressed their concern about the exit of Herbert, saying it could affect their relationship with the club.

Don Bortey sounds alarm bells

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 February 2003 - ‘Dada Diouf’ Bernard Don Bortey, the prolific Hearts of Oak attacker, has sent warning signals to Liberty Professionals, Great Olympics and Asante Kotoko not to dream of the 2003 National Premiership.

“Hearts will not compromise on that. It is non-negotiable,” he told the nation’s GTV in an interview monitored by Ghana Review International Sports. The 2002 joint-goalking said a number of fans have praised him for an impressive showing last year.

“They ain’t seen nothing yet! 2003 will be more terrific,” Bortey promised GTV.

He assured all Hearts and his numerous fans of his commitment to the club for 2003 and said he had temporarily shelved any plans to play outside Ghana this season. “I want to join my colleagues (Phobians) in Africa. I hope to play so well I will attract the attention of a big agent somewhere and sign a more acceptable contract for 2004. for now all my attention is on Hearts,” he assured all.

Kotoko IMC asks persons to return properties

Kumasi, Feb 5, GNA - The Interim Management Committee (IMC) of Kumasi Asante Kotoko has directed all persons who are in possession of the club's properties to return them immediately to the club's secretariat.

It also directed that, henceforth, all correspondence should be sent to the club's secretariat at Asomfo road at Adum, Kumasi. These were contained in a statement read by the Chairman of the IMC, Sylvester Asare-Owusu, after a maiden meeting at the club's secretariat in Kumasi on Wednesday.

He said Nana Yaw Owusu and Joe Owusu-Ansah have been appointed as the interim Accra representatives of the club. Asare-Owusu said the IMC had a little time in view of the impending LG sponsored GHALCA Top Four Competition, African Cup and this year's Premier League, adding "the IMC is going to place more emphasis on action than talking". He appealed to the players and supporters alike to give the IMC the needed co-operation to enable it discharge its duties.

George Ayisi-Boateng, a member of the committee, appealed to the media especially the radio stations to crosscheck their facts before going on air in order to avoid creating tension among fans and supporters. He said the football scene in the country seemed to be polarised due to the activities of some radio presenters and urged them to change their ways.

Meanwhile, Yaw Boafo, Secretary to the IMC, has refuted a news report attributed to him on Joy FM, alleging that Otumfuo wanted Kotoko to be run by only Asantes. He said the IMC was saddened that a spin should be put on an interview granted to the radio station, adding that, "I never said and will never say that Otumfuo wants only Asantes to serve on the Kotoko management team".

Boafo stated that, what he told the reporter was that Otumfuo wanted the club to be run from Kumasi where the secretariat was situated, adding that, some of the IMC members were non-Asantes.

Committee for Zone Three qualifier launched

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 February 2003 - The Ghana Handball Association on Wednesday inaugurated an 11-member Local Organising Committee (LOC) under the leadership of B.T. Baba, the association's chairman, to organise the 8th All African Games Zone Three Elimination Series scheduled for the Accra Sport Stadium and the Prison's Sports Complex.

The competition runs from Monday, February 17 to 23 and would involve six other West African countries - Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo and Niger. Winners in the men and women divisions would represent the zone at the All African Games scheduled for Abuja, Nigeria, from October 4 to 18.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Baba who is also the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, said the right for the second time for Ghana to host the elimination series is an indication of the confidence that the African Handball Federation has in Ghana.

When Ghana first hosted the event, the Cote d'Ivoire won in the men and women divisions respectively to represent the zone. "But this time, it is our wish that Ghana's men and women's team win the events to enable the country to improve upon her bronze medal performance in South Africa in 1999".

Baba said the teams have been on non-residential camping since December and moral in camp is high.

Launching the committee, Dr Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah, Chief Executive of the National Sports Council said Ghana's excellent organisational prowess as exhibited during the first hosting posed a great challenge to the present LOC. He, however, said looking at the calibre of personalities put together, he expects nothing than an exciting, competitive, orderly and successful tournament.

Dr Owusu-Ansah said as much as it is their wish that the country's teams qualify, "we should not be blinded by this desire to extent that the basic principles of fair play would be thrown over board. We should bear in mind that such tournaments are also meant to cement friendly relationships among nations so that irrespective of the outcome, we should be proud that we played host to such friendly nations", Dr Owusu-Ansah said.

Other committees inaugurated were the Accommodation, Feeding, Transport, Publicity, Protocol, Technical, Entertainment and Refreshment plus sponsorship Committees.

Meanwhile, the National female team would play a select male side at the Prison's sports complex on Wednesday (today) to toughen them for the tournament.
