GFA makes U-turn to appoint Burkhard!

Ben KoufieAccra (Greater Accra) 19 February 2003 - Ghana Review International sources close to the Ghana Football Association indicates that German Burkhard Ziese has finally been endorsed as the headcoach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.

The decision to appoint the German was taken at a marathon emergency meeting of the FA deep last night. The backtrack of Ben Koufie’s FA from a previous decision to reject all three shortlisted coaches from an original 12 applicants, it was learnt, was heavily weighed by public outcry at the failure of the soccer controlling body not to award the German the vacancy after he reportedly excelled in a grilling interview.

Ziese came out tops scaling the 60 percentage mark set by a 11-member interview panel, ahead of Ghana’s Emmanuel Kwasi Afranie and the highly tipped Portuguese Manuel Goncalves Gomes. Ziese was passed on a 61 percentage mark.

After a long meeting of the management board of the FA, it was agreed that the recommendation of the interview panel be allowed to stay. The FA’s decision will be communicated to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

A number of people that Ghana Review International sports linked up with this morning (Wednesday) hailed the FA’s turnaround as a matured decision that places high premium on for Ghana’s football future.
