Pan African Orchestra to tour UK

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 17 January 2002  - The Pan African Orchestra (PAO) would begin its 2002 tour of the United Kingdom from January 31 to April 4.

 

A statement in Accra said the Orchestra would undertake three tours in all. It would feature in 38 shows to be hosted by the Chichester Festival Theatre in Chichester, the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, the Hall of Cornwall in Truro, Belfast Waterfront Hall in Belfast and Town Hall Theatre in Galway.

 

The second tour, dubbed "Remembering Fela" would begin from April 26 to May 11 and would be collaboration between the PAO and the UK-based Tunde Jegede Ensemble and would pay homage to the late Afro beat musician Fela Kuti.

 

The third tour would feature as a major event in the Commonwealth festivals this year. The statement said the Orchestra would collaborate with one of India's best female ensembles "Stree Shakti", founded by Tabla virtuoso, Anuradha Pal, in a series of concerts in the UK.

 

The African Caribbean Music Circuit, a subsidiary of the Arts Council of England was financing all the collaborations, the statement added.

 

It said it would hold a pre-departure concert at the British Council Hall in Accra on January 25. It would be a neoclassical African music concert whose major presentation would be Nana Danso Abiam's composition - Nana Yaa Asantewaa Symphony in four movements.
