Margaret Simpson wins SWAG topmost award

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 02 January 2003 - Ghana's sole medallist at this year's Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Margaret Simpson, has become the first woman to win the Sports Writers' Association's (SWAG) topmost award - the Sportswoman of the Year.

 

A statement issued by SWAG in Accra said by her award, Simpson has broken the male dominance in the 27 year-old history of the award. Simpson, 20, who won the heptathlon bronze at the Manchester Games and later gold in the African Championship in Tunisia, was also named the Athlete of the Year.

 

Accra Hearts of Oak's player maker, Charles Taylor was named the Footballer of the Year while his female counterpart Florence Okoe of La Ladies and key player of the Black Queens, emerged the Female Footballer of the Year.

 

Taylor and his teammate Bernard Don Bortey, both tied with 18 goals at the end of the Premier League, were named Joint Goal-King. League Champions, Accra Hearts of Oak, won the Top Scoring Club award for the sixth successive year, scoring 72 goals.

 

Other awards include, Black Queens -Team of the Year, James Toney-Professional Boxer of the Year, and Joseph Willington as Referee of the Year.

Okrakwadwo wins special soccer tournament

 

Okrakwadwo(Eastern Region) 02 January 2003 - Okrakwadwo F/C beat Koforidua- based Bafana bafana F/C 1-0 in the finals to lift the cup at stake a special soccer tournament at Okrakwadwo near Adukrom-Akuaoem, as part of activities organised by Uncle Stevens Progressive Youth Club, to educate the youth on HIV/AIDS as well as drug abuse last Friday.

 

Koforidua Magazine F/C who lost 2-3 to Bafanabafana was adjudged the best losers and presented with the cup for the third place. Anthony Gyampoh, former Akuapem North District Chief Executive, who donated the cups for the tournament, called on the youth not to allow poverty to lead them into activities which would make them contract the HIV virus.

 

He urged the youth to abstain from premarital sex and drug abuse to protect themselves against the disease. Gyampoh called on the government to provide more resources to the District Assemblies to help them develop facilities at the local levels to promote sports.

 

Thomas McCarthy, Superintendent of Police at the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters, advised the youth to support the police in the enforcement of the law for their own protection and warned that any attempt to obstruct the police in their duties would amount to aiding and abetting criminals.

Kasoa Fauzan F/C wins

 

Cape Coast (Central Region) 02 January 2003 - Kasoa Fauzan F/C beat Agona Swedru Fankobaa 2-0 in their second division league match played at the Swedru sports stadium last Sunday.

 

From the start of the game, Fauzan F/C outclassed their opponents in all departments, and led 1-0 at half time from a goal scored by outside right, Ekow Benson, in the 41st minute.

 

Fankobaa threw everything into attack and made frantic efforts to equalise but the able defenders of Fauzan kept them at bay.

 

On resumption, Fankobaa maintained pressure but their hopes of drawing level with Fauzan were shattered when substitute Yahaya Sumalia raised the tally to 2-0 in the 85th minute. In another match at Kasoa, God is Great F/C whipped Winneba Cecil

Hunters 3-0.
