Kumasi tense ahead of Kotoko crucial meeting

Accra (Greater Accra) 31 January 2003 - With the minutes ticking away for the creation of a new phase for Kotoko, the club's myriad followers have their ears cupped in the direction of the Manhyia Palace. Kotoko fans are too eager to hear something from Manhyia tomorrow (Saturday) to end weeks of anxiety as regards who directs affairs in the club.

Information pieced together indicates that anxiety is mounting in Kumasi in the days leading to tomorrow's meeting between Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the board and management. This, according to observers in Kotoko, has come about because of certain revelations in the last few days, especially the disclosure of the heavy contribution made by the Board towards the running of the club but which has been largely unknown to the fans.

Last week, a former Director of Operations of the S.S. Appiah management, Yaw Gyasi, went on air to debunk the widely-held view in Kumasi that in the last four years Kotoko has survived on the philanthropic attachment of Herbert Mensah.

Speaking on a Kumasi-based FM station, Gyasi disclosed that contributions had been made to management behind the scenes. He specifically mentioned the ¢350m contributed by the board and another ¢300m the club received from Manhyia to enable the club travel to Casablanca, Morocco, to play Wydad Athletic Club in the first leg of final of the Cup Winners Cup.

When Gyasi attended a football match later the next day at the Kumasi Stadium, he was cheered and congratulated by a crowd for giving them a true picture of happenings in the club. Many supporters of Kotoko in Kumasi have also been confused by a sustained media campaign in the city by some members of management on the need for their mandate to be renewed to ensure the carrying through of their programmes.

This is against the background that just days after the match against WAC, some radio stations in both Kumasi and Accra announced that Manhyia had renewed the Herbert Mensah management's mandate for two more years.

Last weekend, a well-known supporter of the club in Kumasi, Ali Maradona, went round some radio stations in Kumasi and appealed to supporters to readily accept whatever pronouncement Manhyia makes from tomorrow.

Reports of a planned demonstration by some supporters if Manhyia doesn't come out with a decision favourable to management have been discounted by a very respectable figure in Kotoko who says measures are in place to contain any such situation. Meanwhile, the playing body is said to be well focused on its training schedule under the two new expatriate trainers. – Graphic Sports

Goldfields pursue Kotoko over transfer monies

Accra (Greater Accra) 31 January 2003 - An Accra High Court presided over by Mrs Agyemang Bempah has now given February 7 as the date for judgement regarding which court should hear the case in which Obuasi Goldfields SC are demanding ¢145m with interest from Kumasi Asante Kotoko as an outstanding balance of the transfer fees in respect of Nana Arhin Duah and Isaac Boakye.

The decision was reached after counsel for the two teams had argued their cases at yesterday's sitting.

Kotoko, represented by Larry Otoo, had filed a preliminary objection to the venue of the case and prayed the High Court to transfer the case to Kumasi since that is the their principal place of business. They also argued that Kumasi will be more appropriate for the hearing as Goldfields also operate from Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

But Goldfields' solicitors, Kuenyehia and Co., appealed against the objection on the grounds that Kotoko have an Accra House Number on the Okodan Road at Osu with telephone numbers which give the Accra High Court the jurisdiction to hear the case.

As the plaintiff, Goldfields are demanding ¢145m with interest from Kotoko for failing to honour their part of the agreement entered into by the two parties in respect of the transfer of the two players from Goldfields to Kotoko during the last season.

According to the statement of claim, Goldfields transferred Nana Arhin Duah to Kotoko at a fee of ¢130m. However, as mutually agreed between the two teams, Kotoko made a part payment of ¢65m with the promise of settling the outstanding balance of ¢65m later.

In the case of Isaac Boakye, his transfer fee was supposed to be ¢80m as agreed by both parties, with Kotoko making no commitment in terms of advance payment as was the case of the other player. It was after several demands for the money had failed that Goldfields resorted to the due process of the law last month to recover the amount.

Specifically, the plaintiff is not only seeking to recover the outstanding debts alone, but interests as well accruing from the prevailing bank rates from 1 June and 1 August 2000, in the case of Arhin Duah and Boakye respectively. – Graphic Sports

They pledged to work hard to justify the confidence reposed in them by the IMC. Arthur, on his part, said he is in full control of affairs and nothing would prevent him from moving the club forward with the support of other members of the IMC.

He promised to run an open administration for the good of the club. Arthur stated that United is a traditional club that commands a big following and it would be suicidal for anybody to take it as his or her personal property.

He said he has started paying all arrears owed the players as well as unpaid bonuses and training has started in earnest at the Coronation Park. According to Arthur, a new bus he has ordered for the club is on the high seas and would be arriving in the country soon.
