Premier league

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 29 July 2002-Hamza Mohammed who is on loan from Real Tamale United (RTU) saved Kumasi Asante Kotoko from facing the wrath of their vociferous supporters with an 88th minute goal in a crunch Premier League match against Suhum Maxbees at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.

Kotoko last Sunday lost 3-0 to their archrivals Accra Hearts of Oak and needed to win today's match to appease their fans. The game was cruising gradually to a draw following Maxbees' resilience in defence particularly goalkeeper Sammy Nartey until Hamza Mohammed struck the vital goal to save the team from a possible attack.

Kotoko went straight into attack after kick off, determined to erase the Hearts' defeat but Frank Osei shot wide at close range in the second minute. So ferocious was the Kotoko attack that by the 14th minute, Maxbees had to pull out player-maker Massawudu Mumuni who was played out of the game for Asamoah Dzifah.

Kotoko were unrelenting in attack but they either shot wide or fumbled in front of goal. This coupled with the excellent goalkeeping of Nartey robbed them of goals. Michael Osei and Dan Acquah came close to scoring in the 23rd and 26th minutes respectively but shot wide.

Then in the 39th minute, Nana Frimpong raced with the ball into the penalty box but was brought down before he could cork for the killer. The referee subsequently awarded a penalty to Kotoko but was wasted by Micheal Osei who shot straight into the hands of goalkeeper Nartey.

Kotoko pulled out Abedi Sarfo and Nana Frimpong for Joe Okyere and Stephen Oduro respectively in the 51st minute while Maxbees also sent in George Apraku for Bart Plange seven minutes later.

The changes brought more bite into the Kotoko attack but surprisingly they displayed total lack of imagination as they made heavy weather of the numerous chances that came their way until the 88th minute.

Fuseini Adams provided Micheal Osei with trough ball who in turn laid on a neat pass for Hamza who blasted past goalkeeper Nartey. Maxbees nearly pulled off a spectacular equaliser but goalkeeper George Owu tipped Anthony Appiah's goal-bound shot to corner.

The Apostles of Power soccer, B.A. United confirmed their superiority over their local rivals, Bofoakwa Tano by beating them 2-1 in their match played at the Sunyani Coronation Park. B.A. united came out from a goal deficit in the first half to score twice in the spate of five minutes during the second half to seal the doom of Bofoakwa.

The match which kick off under the instructions of Accra-based class one referee B.Y. Kwabo saw an uncompromising exchanges at the early stages of the game. Bofoakwa Tano, however, determined to break United's dominance over them in recent years showed sign of running away with victory when they first shot into the lead. Kojo Opoku scored in the 37th minute against the run of play when he intercepted a ball sidestepped his markers to slot the ball into the ball.

United levelled up in the 73rd minute through Emmanuel Nkrumah who exploited a goalmouth melee. The Apostles increased their tempo and deservedly got the match winner from Mohammed Alhassan who rose to nod home Emmanuel Nkrumah's corner kick. Skipper Abeiku Aikins of Bofoakwa was shown the red card in the dying minutes of the game.

Yandall clocked 46 minutes 27 seconds while Solim Botsyo was timed 49 minutes 40 seconds in the 15-kilometre race that attracted 1,000 pupils from the Eastern, Greater Accra, Central and Western regions.

They each received 400,000 cedis bursary, a carton of Milo, 122 exercise books, a certificate. By their victories, Yandall and Botsyo have qualified to participate in the Accra Milo Marathon under-15 division slated for September 21, this year.

Francis Ayetor also from the Volta Region and Grace Dukoo from the Central Region were runner-ups in both divisions while the third positions went to Stephen Nartey of Eastern Region and Comfort Gbati from the Volta Region respectively.

The first runner-ups were each given 300,000 cedis bursary, 20 sachets of Milo, 10 exercise books and a certificate while those who came third took home 200,000 cedis books and a certificate.

Subsequently, the runners-up have also qualified to participate in the Accra event. Those who placed fourth to the 1,000th position were presented with Milo products, exercise books and certificates.

Master Frederick Gaitu, eight, of Kabore Primary and Miss Elizabeth Kumah, nine, of Jasikamn Roman Catholic Primary schools also received a quantity of Nestle products for being the youngest participants in the marathon race.

Mr Patrick Ofosu, Product Manager of Milo, Nestle Ghana Limited, sponsors of the race said the Ho Marathon cost 150 million.

He said Nestle Ghana Limited with the collaboration of the Ghana Education Service have being in sports development and promotion for the past 17 years and expressed the hoped that this will grow towards unearthing talents among school children.

He said the under -15 was the core target of Milo since they constituted the largest consumers of their product hence the need to build and restore lost energy particularly among growing children.

Mr Kwesi Hobenu, National Vice-Chairman of school and colleges sports federation said in pursuance of "catch them young" policy of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, reliable partnership with Nestle was a way forward.

He noted that the establishment of physical education and sporting events are concomitant machinery in the development and promotion of a healthy child and hoped that Nestle assistance would be sustained.

Mr Hobenu who is also the Kadjebi District Director of Education called for the reactivation and organisation of P.E lessons in all schools including disabled persons. Earlier, Mr Kwasi Owusu-Yeboa, Volta Regional Minister, fired the gun for the race to start.
