Maggie arrives in Ghana tomorrow

Accra (Greater Accra) 31 July 2003 - Commonwealth bronze medalist and African heptathlon champion, Margaret Simpson will arrive in the country tomorrow evening for this weekend's SWAG Awards event.

Simpson, who will receive the topmost award, the SWAG Sportswoman of the Year award in addition to the Athlete of the Year award is being flown in from her Mauritius base by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the National Sports Council and the Ghana Athletics Association.

Simpson, who will be the first female to receive SWAG's topmost and prestigious award, will be honoured for her outstanding performance which saw her winnng bronze at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, United Kingdom and later gold at the African Championship.

Eighteen other sportsmen and sportswomen, companies and organisations will also be honoured for either their outstanding performance in the 2002 sporting season or their continuous support for the development and promotion of sports.

The main award winners include Charles Taylor, Bernard Dong-Bortey, Florence Okoe, Patrick Taylor, Edward Seidu Adjanako, Abena Amponsaa Asumeng-Addo, The Black Queens, Accra Hearts of Oak, Referee Joseph Wellington and Bobby Abdul Rahman.

The special awards will be received by Nii Oko Nikoi Dzani, Nestle Ghana Limited, NDK Financial Services and King Tony Akwetey Chrishang.

The strictly by invitation programme has His Excellency President John Kufuor as the Guest of Honour and it is being sponsored by Western Union Money Transfer, Akosombo Textiles Limited, Nestle Ghana Limited, Effects Media House, with support from Amalgamated Bank and Budget Cash and Carry.

Good old Marriots International Band is the band in attendance. Meanwhile all award winners who are yet to receive their invitation cards are to contact Rosalind Amoh at Graphic Sports immediately.
