Nigeria gets Ghana on board for World Cup bid

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 12 March 2003 - Nigeria, one of the official candidates to host the 2010 World Cup, on Monday signed up Ghana in its bid to co-host the soccer showpiece with four other countries.

 

Nigeria is also seeking support from Cameroon, Togo and Benin in its bid to win the race against the five other bidding states - Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and two countries which lost out last time to Germany for the 2006 edition, South Africa, and Morocco.

 

Monday's agreement was signed by Nigerian sports minister Ibn Steven Akiga and Edward Osei Kwaku, his Ghanaian counterpart Nigeria's proposal is based on the use of ten venues - four in Nigeria itself, two each in Cameroon and Ghana, and one apiece in Benin and Togo.

 

Bids for the 2010 World Cup must be on FIFA's application desk by 31 May with completed dossiers presented to soccer's governing body on September 30. The winner will be announced in May 2004. - Agence France-Presse
