Winneba (Central Region) 15 May 2002 - Mr Mike Alex Hammah, a former Deputy Minister of Roads and Transport, has appealed to musicians to compose songs that could help in the moral and spiritual transformation of the country.
Addressing members of Music Students Union of the University College of Education, Winneba to mark their first anniversary, Mr Hammah said the nation needed songs that ''can turn the hearts and minds of the people, particularly the youth, from sexual promiscuity and focus them on the acquisition of excellent moral qualities''.
He blamed the escalation of immoral acts that had resulted in the spreading of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the country on ''the undesirable and destructive songs on the music market''. ''Good and decent songs are a strong base for inspiration and encouragement to committed and dedicated citizens.''
Mr Hammah appealed to musicians to critically examine their contributions to national development and make amendments to suit national growth. He called for the revival of the national censorship board to regulate songs produced by music makers. ''I urge you, students of the College, to accept the challenge to play a key role in the transformation of the Ghanaian music industry."
