Week 6 league preview - Positions at top to see no change

Accra (Greater Accra) 17 May 2002 - The Premier League table is taking shape as the perennial title contenders jostle for places in the six-week old table gradually separating themselves from the rest of the pack.

Five times league champions, Accra Hearts of Oak, are in a familiar territory as they lead the table with five points firing out of the block in their usual buoyant mood by winning all six matches in the process and scoring 11 goals conceding only one. This Sunday, they welcome Alhaji Grunsah's King Faisal, who are having a patchy start to the season having won only one match this season and are placed eleventh on the league.

The Phobians who are having a whirlwind season sweeping everybody on sight are likely to easily add the Kumasi club to their growing list of casualties. Under Coach Herbert Addo, the Hearts team, has blossomed into a unit where all the front men are capably of scoring and that should be a worry to Faisal whose defence concedes a goal a game.

In spite of this it would not be an easy pay-day for the champions, since King Faisal are noted for giving big teams torrid time whenever they meet them in competitive encounters. However the best their resistance could earn them would be a highly improbable draw considering the total team work that exist presently in the Phobian team.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko's high hopes of annexing this year's title after Herbert Mensah three years rebuilding effort have found their ambitions being given severe tests by their arch rivals Hearts, who are jealously guarding their five points lead. The Porcupine Warriors have been left to do the chasing job hoping to capitalise on any slip by the table toppers.

Kotoko coming from an impressive lone goal victory against Bofoakwa face back to batan Power F/C who would have their jobs cut out for them as they face the fabulous team that had put not less than five goals past their opponents in their last two outings at the Kumasi Sport Stadium. The best Power could achieve would be to bring down the goal margin but that again would be a herculean task considering the striking options at the disposal of Kotoko.

Goldfield are expected to make it two wins on the trot as they take on an Okwawu United side whose recent performance have not been anything to right home about. The encounter is a tricky one for the Miners as their opponents appear to have shaken off the early season slum with a lone goal victory over RTU last Wednesday.

Accra Great Olympics who have lost four consecutive matches prompting the resignation of their coach, J. E. A. Sarpong are likely to suffer defeat number five as they trek to Prestea to take on Mine Stars. In the other matches, Liberty Professionals take on Sekondi Hasaacas at the Accra Sports Stadium while RTU are like to take the maximum points when they host Arsenal at their newly adopted Bolgatanga home grounds. Bottom of the table Maxbees would host Bofoakwa at Koforidua whiles Bofoakwa slug out with Dawu Yougsters at Sunyani.

Hearts beat Beninois side 2-0

Accra (Greater Accra) 17 May 2002 - Premier League leaders Accra Hearts of Oak on Thursday beat a Beninois first division side Requins F.C. 2-0 in an international friendly soccer match played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The match formed part of the training exercises of the Phobians for their league matches was played in a highly competitive manner. Hearts made attempts at scoring in the early minutes of the game, which was witnessed by few spectators, through the efforts of comeback warlord Charles Taylor, Wisdom Abbey and Frank Turkson in the early minutes of the game.

This paid off in the 42nd minute when they stormed the opponents' territory and the ball hit the hand of a hard-pressed Beninois defence man. Taylor, who was playing after a four match-ban for receiving a red card, converted the resultant penalty to put Hearts a goal up till the end of the first half.

On resumption, Hearts added another goal in the 59th minute when a midfield combination between Osmanu Amadu and Taylor saw Amadu scoring the second goal. Requins made efforts to redeem their image by having a consolation goal but all to no avail as they missed chances that came their way until FIFA referee Alex N. Kotey whistled for the end of the match.

Bofoakwa Board says management body in control

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo Region) 17 May 2002 - The Board of Directors of Bofoakwa Tano Football Club on Thursday reaffirmed that the Management of the club, under the leadership of Mr Ebo Mends, the Acting Chief Executive, was still in control of affairs.

It stated in a press statement signed by Mr Otu Essel Kwadwo Fordjour, a Sunyani-based lawyer and a Solicitor and Director of the club on behalf of the board that, "any letter or decision to the contrary remains void and of no effect."

The statement, issued in Sunyani was in reaction to the purported dissolution of the management of the club by a section of its supporters in a press release, which was signed by some of them including Mr Yaw Frimpong, Ben Prince, Alhaji Munkaila and one Mr Adu.

It said "there is a board in existence which takes decision on the management. It is not the prerogative of any supporter or the entire supporters to claim to have the power to dissolve the management of the club." The statement reminded supporters that Mr Mends was asked to assume his position when nobody was ready to do so.

It reminded the public that "An agreement was signed between Mr Mends and the club and same cannot be abrogated on the whims and caprices of anybody. " The statement commended the supporters union for assisting in the management of the club and advised it to exercise restraint in the face of problems. It invited any one who could assist in the running of the club to come forward and said, "We are advising the supporters to remain clam and channel their grievances to the board of directors."

Meanwhile the board in its bid to address the concerns of the supporters advised the Acting chief executive to dispense with the service of Mr Takyi Arhin, a Management Committee member to facilitate investigations into some allegations that have been levelled against him.
