Accra (Greater Accra) 10 November 2001 - The Pan African Writers' Association (PAWA) has honoured 17 individuals and organisations for their assistance and support.

 

Eight individuals and companies were presented with the "PAWA Esteemed Patron of the Arts Award" for their support to the association over the years.

 

Nine other individuals and organisations were decorated with the "PAWA Grand Patron of the Arts Award" for their special contribution to the creation of PAWA.

 

A statement on Friday by Mr Atukwei Okai, Secretary General said the awards were made in Accra at the Ninth International African Writers Day.

 

The day has been instituted by the Organisation of African Unity to afford African societies the opportunity to reflect on, acknowledge and honour the contribution of African Writers to the development of the continent.

 

Those who were presented with the "PAWA Esteemed Patrons of the Arts Award" were Mr Hassane Rabehi, Algerian Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Eddie Addo, Managing Director of Unimax Ghana Limited and Mr Bernard N.S. Sackey, Managing Director of All Afra Electrical Company. The organisations were Reiss and Co, Kingdom Books and Stationery Services, Ikan Limited, Ecobank and Volta River Authority.

 

Those who were awarded the PAWA Grand Patrons of the Arts were Mr Amarkai Amartefio, Honorary Consul General of Sweden, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, MP for Bimbilla, Mr Annan Cato, Secretary to the cabinet, Mr J.E. Allotey-Pappoe and Mr Willie Amarfio.

 

The others are the late Mr Sam Aryettey, Mr Bill Marshall and Mr Vincent Okunor.
