Accra (Greater Accra)
01 November 2002 - Barely a week after the pairing for the Women version of the
African Cup of Nations came out, the handlers of the Black Queens, who are
paired with the defending champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria, have invited
four professional players to beef up
the team.
Alberta Sackey, the
former skipper of the Queens who is at the moment plying her trade in the
United States is leading the pack of foreign based players to fly down to join
locally assembled players for the
tournament billed for Nigeria in December.
Baselia Amoah-Tetteh
and Adjoa Bayor who led the team to tame Senegal 3-0 in Dakar during the
qualifying series but left the country before the return encounter in Kumasi to
begin their professional career in the US would also return to the team. Utility
star Elizabeth Baidoo is likewise expected to add up to the four foreign players.
The GNA Sports has it
that all the four players are in one team in the US and have kept constant
touch with the team's technical directors. Though the Queens qualified with
impressive wins, it was glaring that the team would need other experience
players to battle opponents like the Super Falcon of Nigeria.
All the invited
players were among the silver medal winning team that played in the maiden
edition of the African Cup of Nations hosted by Nigeria in 1999 and who later
played in the South Africa 2001 Cup of Nations.

Cycling
Association prepares for Africa Games
Accra (Greater Accra)
01 November 2002 - The Ghana Cycling Association (GCA) has stepped up its search
for a formidable team to represent the country at next year's All
Africa Games slated
for the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
As part of exercise
for Africa's showpiece, the association last weekend organised the "La
Route de Kumasi" which attracted 90 cyclists from 14 clubs. They were from
Accra, Koforidua, Kumasi, Sunyani and Tamale. The cyclists competed in three
categories - the individual time trial, team time trial and Criterion.
In the individual time
trial, Henry Djangman of the Seven River Park Club in Accra, scaled above his
colleagues while City Migro Club also of Accra emerged winner in the team trial
category.
John Zormelo of the
River Park who rose to stardom at last year's COWBELL sponsored cycling races
held in Accra, was the toast of the fans when he exhibited great resilience and
endurance to power past the rest of 89 competitors. In all, 20 cyclists were presented
with cash prizes and products from Wonder Foods Limited (COWBELL).
The French Embassay
under the Ghana-France Co-operation sponsored the programme with support from
COWBELL. Francis Kpesenu, Secretary General of the Association later told the
GNA Sports that the association is billed to organise the Tour du Ghana competition
early December, which is by far the biggest event on the cycling calendar.
He said the event
would enable the association to pencil some names down and together with those
selected during the La route de Kumasi would embark on a series of training
programmes before the All Africa Games next year.
