First division match ends in riot

Moree (Central Region) 25 October 2002 - An outstanding league match between Cape Coast Venomous Vipers and Moree Great Astons played at Moree on Wednesday ended abruptly in the 81st minute due to rioting by supporters. At the time of the stoppage, Vipers were leading 2-1.

The disturbance started when Winneba based class one referee Prince Percy Taylor, yellow carded Astons Kwamina Azor for rough play. But aggrieved supporters of Astons, who were not happy with referee's decision attacked assistant referee O.K. Amoako who had earlier signalled, referee Taylor's attention of the offence. They later besieged the football pitch and beat up the second referee.

When tempers cooled down, Mr. Taylor called off the match, as the second referee could not continue to officiate in the match. Meanwhile, Vipers are claiming the three points and three goals at stake since it was the home team, which caused the abrupt end of the match.

Black Queens receive $500 bonus

Accra (Greater Accra) 25 October 2002 - The players and officials of the national women soccer team, the Black Queens were full of smiles last Saturday when each member took home $500 (about ¢4m) when the team was breaking camp. The money is their bonus for winning their first leg encounter with their Senegalese counterparts in Dakar earlier in the month.

The amount paid them represented half the total of $1m promised them if they come out victorious in both their home and away encounters. The authorities promised to pay the other half later.

The GNA Sports gathered that the team left camp after the monies had been received by the players with instructions that they return to camp on Thursday 24 October to prepare for the Cup of Nations that would be held in Nigeria in December. However, a new date would have to be fixed for camping because Sylvester Mensah, chairman of the National Women Soccer Committee who is supposed to endorse their invitation was away in DR Congo with Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

It would be recalled that the Black Queens moved back to the Winneba Sports College on Sunday 13 October after their 3-1 win over the Senegalese in an Africa Cup qualifier at the Kumasi Stadium on 19 October.

Hearts not happy about chain of postponements of league

Accra (Greater Accra) 25 October 2002 - Defending League champions and leaders, Accra Hearts of Oak has expressed dissatisfaction over the continuous postponement of the national premier league.

A statement signed by Ashford Tettey Oku, Administrative Manager of the club stated that, the club is not convinced about the reasons cited for the recent postponement of the league again. He described the reasons as strange adding that the club is frustrated and disappointed at the manner in which the Professional League Board (PLB) is struggling to see the 2002 season through.

He said, the delay in the start of the league and its subsequent postponements have given the public cause to suspect what the PLB is being manipulated. The administrative manager stated that, the general public have also questioned the fairness in and justification for many of the frequent postponements, adding that this situation defeats the competitive spirit and value of the 2002 league.

According to him, enough room is being granted to desperate clubs which either want to win the league or escape the noose to engage in all sorts of manipulations. He added that, it sets a bad precedence, since Ghanaian clubs who have travelled outside and doctor their return flights to suit their aspirations.

Tettey-Oku said, the postponement of the league adversely affects the growth, development and success of Ghanaian clubs participating in continental competitions because they have little time to negotiate, recruit and register new players to strengthen their teams by 30 November as stipulated by CAF.

He called on the PLB to put its acts together and avoid a repetition of this kind of unprofessional handling of the game which is a set back to securing sponsorship for the league.

It would be recalled that, the National Premier League which was scheduled to resume this Sunday has once again been shifted to 1 November.
